In the sleepy Northern Argentinian town of Salta, there are a wealth of hostel choices. 10 according to HostelWorld. I’m not gunna lie to you, there’s only one that’s worth staying at. Don’t bother trying the rest, just go to the best.
Stay at Las Rejas.
Opened in 2001, the building is situated in one of the best looking and best positioned areas of Salta – only 200m from the main square, and just a few blocks from the nightlife and party district. The building itself is beautiful. It underwent a recent renovation, and the result is light, edgy, classic and beautiful all at the same time.
The manager Francisco had a vision, and it has been brilliantly realised. From the cute and trippy graffiti in the communal areas, and the sun-soaked and brightly painted courtyard, to the little pallet seating that meets you at the entrance, it all comes together in a way that just works.
A relatively small hostel, the kitchen and dining area are the perfect size to meet and chat with fellow travellers. By no means huge – small enough to spark conversation, but without being cramped.
The rooms continue the cute and homely theme, with the biggest being just 6 beds. Every single one comes with a private bathroom, and the shower was steaming hot and water-cannon pressure all day long.
When you arrive at Las Rejas you’ll notice an office out front with a sign saying ‘Dexotic’. This is Las Rejas’ travel agency, which arranges tours throughout the Salta area. The dudes in there are super helpful, and will tee up trips that will blow your tiny mind. And guess what? You stay at Las Rejas, you get sweet, sweet discounts.
Speaking of super helpful dudes, all the crew at reception are BRILLIANT. On top of being top people, they all speak better English than me (not hard) and have local knowledge sieving through their teeth. They make you feel at home from 2 minutes after you walk in the door, and always have a smile on their dial. It’s a refreshing thing to walk into. Like having housemates who are good mates.
Important yet often-stuffed-up things are all terrifically on point, like a fast and rock solid Wi-Fi connection, access to filtered water, and clean and shiny surfaces everywhere.
Las Rejas is the best hostel in Salta. Don’t believe me? Look on TripAdvisor. Look on HostelWorld. Nothing comes close.
You won’t be disappointed.
